Polls, whether as word could or multiple choice questions, are a great way to keep your audience engaged during your event, while capturing useful information from your attendees.
A “poll” on the SpotMe platform is made up of one question, and a live session can contain multiple polls.
You can apply targeting for your live sessions to determine who exactly among your audience will receive the notification(s) to join the live session's poll(s).
This is done via the Live session configuration, and can be used:
- To launch a targeted standalone poll during the event, that is not associated with a session or anything else in the event. The poll will only be accessible to attendees via the "Join poll" notification, and targeting will be used to determine which segments of your attendees will receive the poll notification.
- For concurrent agenda sessions that each have their own audiences and polls. To do this, targeting needs to be applied identically to both the agenda session and the associated live session poll notification. Only the attendees targeted in the specific agenda session will have access to the linked live session, and only the attendees targeted by the poll notification will be able to join the poll.
- For having multiple polls that are each linked to app menu items, with targeting applied identically to the app menu item and the live session poll notification.
Important: Live session poll notification targeting only affects the "Join the poll" notification that is sent out by the poll, not the live session itself. No other notifications are sent out as part of the poll. Poll notifications are received on mobile and on web app.
Reminder on how poll targeting works:
A “poll” on the SpotMe platform is made up of one question (multiple choice or word cloud). Each single live session can contain one or more polls, and each single live session can only have one set of targeting conditions applied.
This means that all the polls that are created within a single live session will have the same targeting applied. If you wish to apply a different target audiences to your polls, then you will need to create multiple live sessions (one live session per target audience), each containing their own polls.
How to apply targeting to the live session poll notification
Poll targeting can be applied to new live sessions as you create them, or to existing live sessions by accessing the live session settings.
- Create a new live session, or open an existing live session's settings, and click on the Poll notifications targeting section:
When creating a new live session
When accessing an existing live session's interactivity settings: - The Visible to and Hidden to fields can be used to set-up the targeting for the poll notification, using the Add rule buttons:
- Clicking on the Visible to > Add rule button will allow you to create the conditions that your attendees must match in order to receive the poll notification.
- Clicking on the Hidden to > Add rule button will allow you to create the conditions that your attendees must match in order to not receive the poll notification. - As an example, below we have set-up the targeting for the poll notifications so that:
- Only attendees who have "United States of America" selected in their profile in the "Country" field will receive the notification.
- But, attendees who have "SpotMe" as the value entered in their profile in the "Organization" field will not receive the notification.
You can add multiple rules to make your targeting as specific as necessary. You can also create custom metadata (user profile fields) that you can populate and then use for targeting. - Click on Save to finish creating the live session with the poll notification targeting enabled.
Targeting standalone polls
At any time during your event, you can launch a standalone poll. By standalone poll, we mean a poll that is not actually linked to anything else in the app other than the "Join poll" notification that is received by the targeted attendees.
The poll notification can be targeted to allow you to determine exactly who among your audience will receive the notification to join the poll.
Polls are by default associated with live sessions that are created via the Live sessions module. Poll notification targeting can be applied:
- to newly created live sessions, at the time of creating the live session;
- to existing live sessions, by accessing the live session settings.
Notes: The live session with targeted poll notifications can be in person, virtual, or hybrid.
The name and start time of the live session poll will not have any impact on the targeted poll itself, as this will not be seen by the attendees.
Targeting live session polls to concurrent agenda sessions
You can have a number of parallel agenda sessions that are happening at the same time with different audience groups (that may or may not be track sessions that are associated to a master session) and run separate and simultaneous polls for each of these agenda sessions.
To do this, you will need to:
- Create the concurrent agenda sessions and apply targeting to each agenda session to determine who in the audience will attend each concurrent session.
- Create the live sessions, keeping in mind that each individual live session will be linked to one of the concurrent agenda sessions, and the same targeting as in the linked agenda session will need to be applied to the live session poll notification.
In other words, for two concurrent agenda sessions to each have their own targeted polls:
- Concurrent agenda session 1 (with targeting A applied), will need to be associated with live session 1 (with poll notification targeting A applied).
- Concurrent agenda session 2 (with targeting B applied), will need to be associated with live session 2 (with poll notification targeting B applied).
Tip: More information on using agenda session targeting, setting up self-registration in sessions (or using a combination of the two) is also available in the Targeting vs self-registration for sessions article.
Targeting live session polls to app menu items
You can also have a number of polls being run simultaneously, targeted at different groups of attendees, linked to app menu items (instead of concurrent agenda sessions).
To do this you will need to:
- Create individual app menu items that attendees can use as shortcuts to access each individual poll, and apply targeting to each app menu item to determine who in the audience will be able to see the app menu item.
- Create the live sessions, keeping in mind that each individual live session will be linked to one of the app menu items, and that identical targeting will need to be applied to both the linked live session poll notification and the corresponding app menu item.
In other words, for two live session polls to take place simultaneously and each have their targeted audiences:
- App menu item 1 (with targeting A), will need to be associated with live session 1 (with poll notification targeting A).
- App menu item 2 (with targeting B), will need to be associated with live session 1 (with poll notification targeting B).
