Broadcast any experience to your users in real-time via your virtual event, by adding live streams to your workspace. This is particularly useful for situations when your participants or speakers are unable to travel to the venue in person for your event.
Users will not only be able to watch the streams directly from the virtual event, but also simultaneously continue to receive notifications, chat, and interact with the app.
The streams can be easily added to your sessions, and also be made accessible via a link added to a feed post, notification, page, quick link, app menu item, etc.
In addition to this article on producing live streams, find out now how you can add live streams to your workspace in Backstage.
How does the live stream look?
Users can access the live stream via a session page, or via any link made accessible in the app.
Once the user opens the session or access the live stream via the link, the live stream viewer will be displayed along with any relevant information.
Once the stream is playing at the top of the screen, app users can continue to navigate and interact with the app. The viewer will continue to show the stream in a minimized window that can be moved to either side of the screen.
Should the app user open the live stream before the stream has actually started, they will see a message saying that the stream has not yet started.
Producing the stream content
You'll need to have arranged the following in order to create and deliver virtual sessions in your app:
- The necessary AV equipment to film your sessions at the venue, or a vendor that can take care of this for you.
- A streaming platform in order to create the streams (if you do not have a vendor to take care of this).
- App user will access the app via the web app, using a laptop, and will need a strong internet connection (at least 1Mbit/s).
Alternatively, you can use a third-party conferencing tools to allow remote speakers to screen cast any content or presentations they'd like to share and then use SpotMe mobile app as an interactivity and content companion.
Creating the live streams
To create live streams, you can use any of the following live streaming platforms:
In addition to those listed above, any streaming service that provides a video embedding capability can be embedded within the app. More information on this is available in the Embed other live streams article.
Once you have produced the streams and extracted their links (URLs or embed codes), you'll need to add them as live streams to the workspace. More information on this is available in the Creating a livestream article.
Please note that there can be delays on the live stream due to latency (average of 30 seconds), depending on the app users internet speed. Therefore, for any interactive sessions such as polling, Q&A, or feedback forms, please ensure that you give the participants sufficient time to respond to any questions.
We also recommend that participants access the web app via their laptop and if possible use at least 3Mbit/s upload and download internet speed. These recommendations may vary depending on your streaming provider.
Interactive features such as clapping, Q&A, viewers and others are available only when using SpotMe streaming.
Third party embeds such as Vimeo, YouTube and others are fully supported only on the web. iOS and Android apps display those streams in an in-app web browser without picture-in-picture support and other interactive features.
