A microapp for a satellite session is a lightweight web app, accessible on desktop or mobile, designed to support a specific session running alongside a convention or congress.
In Backstage, it appears as a standalone workspace built from a dedicated template, complete with its own participant list, agenda, live sessions, content, notifications, emails, reporting, and more.
This creates a focused digital environment, helping drive engagement while giving participants quick access to targeted content.
A microapp can typically include:
- Walk-in, one click access to a no-download app.
- Agenda with session details and speaker bios.
- Live interaction through Q&A and polls.
- Downloadable slides, documents, and on-demand content.
- Feedback forms.
- Automatically generated certificates of attendance.
And more...
Walk-in, one-click access
Attendees gain access to the microapp as they arrive at the room, ensuring a seamless experience.
Accessing the microapp can be set up in two ways, that can be used together to ensure that all attendees are able to access it:
1 - Standard: Open registration page
Attendees scan a QR code displayed in the room or on a screen. This takes them to the microapp’s registration page, where they can provide their details, give consent, register, and instantly access the session’s microapp.
We recommend that you always make this option with open registration available for attendees in the room, to ensure that they can at any time access the microapp. This can be set up in parallel to the below described Advanced (with Congress API devkit) approach.
2 - Advanced (with Congress API devkit): Tailored invitation email
Using Universal lead capture integrated with the convention or congress API devkit, representatives can scan an attendee’s badge at the session entrance. This automatically creates a user profile in the microapp and triggers a personalized invitation email, giving the attendee immediate access.
If you are using the Advanced - Tailored invitation email approach, we recommend that you also make the above described Standard - Open registration approach available for attendees in the room, to ensure that they can at any time access the microapp via the registration page. You can for example display the registration code on the screen with a note next to it saying “You should have received an invitation email with an access link to the session microapp. If you are unable to access your emails, you can access the microapp by scanning this QR code and providing your information”.
With one-click entry, friction is minimized and attendees enjoy a smooth experience. At the same time, you strengthen first-party engagement and enhance feedback data collection at third-party events.
