As a standard, certain countries use 12 hour formats (for example 2am or 2pm) while others use a 24 hour format (02:00 or 14:00). An example of what time format is commonly used by countries is available here. We try to adhere to these country standards as much as possible.
When it comes to displaying the appropriate time format to attendees in the app agenda, a variety of settings can influence whether the times in the app are shown in 12h or 24h format.
This includes the language set-up in the workspace, but also the language used on the device (for the native app) or the browser (for the web app), and can therefore vary depending on whether attendees are looking at the web app or the native app.
Because this cannot be fully controlled via the workspace settings through Backstage, in this article we'll provide some explanations on how this works, and how app users can adjust how the time format will display in their app.
In the web app
The time displayed in the web app is entirely based on:
- The language set in the workspace, and
- The language set in the browser.
If the language set in the browser is French (which defaults to using 24h format), and the workspace in Backstage supports French (via the Settings > General > Logistics > Languages), then the time format will always be shown in 24h in the web app.
If the language set in the browser is English (US) (which defaults to using 12h format), and the workspace in Backstage supports English (US), via the Settings > General > Logistics > Languages, and only, then the time format will always be shown in 12h in the web app.
Note: This cannot be fully controlled via the workspace through Backstage.
Tip: It is recommended that you always ensure that all languages used by your attendees are supported in your workspace via the Settings > General > Logistics > Languages.
In mobile app
Irrelevant of where the attendee is physically located, the expected behavior of the time format displayed on the mobile app is based on two factors:
- The country/region selected in the app. This country/region can be selected/modified via the "Select Region" setting on the mobile device settings:
- The languages selected for the workspace, via the Settings > General > Logistics > Languages).
Examples of how this works:
User is located in United States, with United States as the region selected on the device.
The workspace supports English (US) as a language.
User will see the time in 12h format, per the United States region selected on the device.
User is located in Germany, with Germany selected as the region on the device.
The workspace supports German as a language.
User will see the time in 24h format, per the Germany region selected on the device.
User is located in United Kingdom, with France selected as the region on the device.
The workspace does support both French and English UK as the languages.
User will see the time in 24h format, per the France region selected on the device.
User is in France, with United Kingdom selected as the region on the device.
The workspace does support both English (UK) and French.
User will see the time in 12h format, per United Kingdom region selected on the device.
Note: This cannot be fully controlled via the workspace through Backstage.
Tip: It is recommended that you always ensure that all languages used by your attendees are supported in your workspace via the Settings > General > Logistics > Languages.
Enabling the 24-Hour Time toggle on the device will not affect at all how the time format is displayed in the app:
