Why can it be beneficial to use a custom domain?
Using your organization's domain for the SpotMe/Onomi platform functionalities, instead of the SpotMe/Onomi domains, can help to reduce the complexity of using SpotMe products on secure internal networks, therefore avoiding any internal firewalls concerns.
It can in addition help to enhance your organization’s brand exposure as well as streamline the integration of the SpotMe/Onomi platform into your organization’s internal networks. The app, registration page, and emails will all be housed on/sent via the chosen domain.
What is the custom domain applied to?
The custom domain is/can be applied to:
- The web app URL.
- The native app container (custom domains are not supported on events using the Eventspace app container).
- The emails sent from the workspace.
- The event’s registration page URL.
What are the requirements/implications for using a custom domain?
Using a custom (branded) container app is mandatory
Events must use a custom or proprietary (branded) app container, in order to use a custom domain for the event platforms.
When using native iOS and Android apps, any changes to the domain will require a resubmission to the app stores. Custom domains are not supported on events using the Eventspace app container.
The custom domain is applied to all workspaces under a given app
Our custom domain feature allows you to use your own subdomain for all workspaces/events under a given application. Having a custom domain for an individual workspace is not possible. Newly created workspaces within the container app will automatically be configured under the configured custom domain.
Using a combination of custom domains and SpotMe domains is not possible. This means that using custom domains is not backwards compatible if your organization already has an app using the SpotMe domain. Existing (already created) workspaces will have to be migrated to the new domain if they would still like to use the web app.
Exception: Registration page URLs are backwards compatible, meaning that they will work with both the former SpotMe and the new custom URLs. The URL that was enabled before the custom domain was configured for the workspace will remain active and will work. After enabling the custom domain and all newly created URLs will be under the custom domain.
Domain must be provided by customer
The customer must provide and manage the domain name that will be used. SpotMe cannot provide the domain.
Certificates needed
The customer will be provided with a CSR (certificate signing request) and will need to provide a PEM formatted certificate, issued with the CSR, and certificate chain.
Setting up DNS records
The customer will be asked to set up a number of DNS records for the custom domain.
SpotMe monitors the validity of the certificate and will contact the customer when renewal is needed.
Configure your custom domain on emails
We highly recommend to also configure custom domains on the emails that are sent out from the workspace/event. For more information on how to do this, please refer to the How to change the domain for emails sent from Backstage article.
How to request usage of a custom domain for your workspace?
Please contact your SpotMe/Onomi Account Manager and they will manage the process.
The request needs to be received at least 1 month before the event start time.
