What kind of notifications are received?
By default, there are three types of notifications that attendees can receive on the web app or mobile app, when polls are launched:
Mobile push notifications: These are received by the user when the mobile app is open, but when the user is not displaying the live session (for example phone is locked, the user is using another app, or the user is not looking at the live session):
Web app pop-up notifications: These are only physically seen when the user is actually looking at the web app, and appear on the top right of the screen:
In-player notifications on web and mobile: These are only seen when the user is watching a live stream, and appear in the lower part of the screen:
In the live session settings, we have added an option that allows you to not send any notifications for all polls associated to that live session. This is particularly helpful when you have concurrent live sessions and do not know exactly which attendees will be attending each live session. More information
Please note that mobile app users will not receive push notifications if the live session is "Virtual". The live session must be "Hybrid" or "In person" for mobile app users to receive these notifications. In-player and popup notifications (visible only when the attendee is already in the webapp/app) will always be delivered.
Notifications on mobile apps
If the participant is attending in-person (for an in-person live session), the following notifications are always received by mobile app users (whether the live session is live or not).
If the participant is attending in-person (for a hybrid live session), the following notifications are received by mobile app users only when the live session is live.
To note, for hybrid sessions, if there is a stream and the participant is in-person, then they cannot see the stream, and will therefore receive the notification immediately, only when the stream is live.
If attendee's phone screen is locked:
Push notification is received when poll is launched. Tapping notification will take the attendee to the poll.
If SpotMe app is open but is in the background (for example user is viewing another app):
Push notification is received when poll is launched. Tapping notification will take the attendee to the poll.
If attendee is in the SpotMe app, but is not in the live session where the poll is taking place (the stream, Q&A, Viewers tab):
Pop-up notification is received in the app. Tapping notification will take the attendee to the poll.
If attendee is in the SpotMe app and is in the live session (the stream, Q&A, Viewers tab):
In-player notification is received.
Notifications on the web app
The following notifications will be received by web app users, only if the stream is live and playing. No notifications will be delivered if the live stream is not live.
Please note that the notifications are delayed in order to match the stream video delay.
If the web app is closed or not visible on screen:
No notification is visible to the attendee.
If the attendee is seeing the web app, but not seeing the live session stream:
Pop-up notification is received in the web app.
If the attendee is seeing the web app and watching the live session stream:
An in-player notification is received.
What about the Notifications list in the app?
There will always be notifications received when the poll is launched. Notifications are automatically removed from the list when the poll is closed.
What if I don't want to send notifications during polls?
As explained above, when you launch polls, notifications are by default sent out to inform the attendees that the poll is taking place. Individual poll targeting can also be used to determine exactly who can access the polls and who will receive the notifications.
In some cases, you may however wish to completely disable the sending of poll notifications. This can be done at the live session level (not at the poll level).
For example, this can be helpful when you have multiple concurrent live sessions (happening at the same time) BUT you do not know exactly which attendees will be attending each live session. In this situation, you cannot apply individual poll targeting to the polls.
In this case, if you do not disable the sending of notifications, each attendee will receive each notification for each poll in the session - even for the polls that are not relevant to them.
This will cause confusion. It is therefore preferable that no notifications are sent, and that instead the host instructs the attendees of a specific session to access the poll (by telling them to open the session in their app).
Important: If you disable the sending of poll notifications, this will not affect the targeting of the poll. The targeted attendees will still be the only attendees who can access the poll (they will just not receive a notification for it).
You can disable the sending of notifications in the Live session options:
- Open the live session settings.
- Disable the Send notifications toggle.
- Click on Save:
